Thankfully in the year 825AD they were replaced by Hindu-Arabic Numerals (1 to 9 and zero) in a book by Al-Khwarizmi called 'On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals'.

Now Australian Numerals can be added to the rich and diverse history of numbers.

The function of mathematical symbols is to abbreviate with no loss of exactness. The symbols that describe the meaning of mathematics, whether for simple digits, arithmetic or calculus work pretty well. However, it is my view that the deficiency of Arabic Numerals is they inherently deal only with natural, or positive numbers rather than integers, that can be positive or negative. An Arabic numeral becomes negative only when a minus symbol is placed in front of it, while an Australian Numeral may be negative without the need for an extra symbol.

Therefore after more than 20 years of thinking about and experimenting with numbers, I've created Australian Numerals to deal with this deficiency. The main advantage of Australian Numerals for arithmetic is they are simply easier to use than Arabic Numerals alone.

If a child can add and subtract and know their times table to 5 x 5, they can do almost any basic arithmetic. It is expected that various mathematical formulae will be able to be simplified further as a consequence of the application of Australian Numerals.

Jonathan Crabtree Bio

As a child Jonathan failed mathematics. His turning point came when he shattered his spine in a motor accident. At this time he tuurned to meditation and visualisation to control his pain and improve his health.A few years later, without any formal mathematics training or education qualification, Jonathan quit his job to teach young children mathematics.

After making headlines for the innovative way he approached mathematics (children learned with their eyes closed) Jonathan went on the break a Guiness World Record for mindpower. His achievement was to recall six decks of shuffled cards a day after sighting them.

In 2004 Jonathan declared the 1st of May World Message Day to declare war on starvation. While receiving personal messages of support from numerous world leaders, there was little action as a consequence. So Jonathan decided to create and promote Australian Numerals to highlight the simple fact that if just 12 extras people a day are given clean water and quality calories, starvation can be ended in the year 2013 at a fraction of the cost of wars or Wall St bail-outs.

ENDNOTE: Australian Numerals is released under a Creative Commons License so please share what you discover at Australian Numerals

Which Mathematics Professor Will Respond?

Which Mathematics Professor Will Respond?

World's greatest mathematicians asked the question

What do these mathematicians think about Australian Numerals?

I've emailed some of the greatest mathematical minds on the planet to explore Australian Numerals and provide feedback on the new number system. However I believe the numbering system I'm writing up at the moment may make algebra easier...

My main goal is to make early level maths more fun and easier to do...

I've just been super stubborn about wanting to do basic mathematics in a simpler way! Like me, I'm sure you would find it very difficult to add the following!

CCXXXII
+ CCCCXIII
+ MCCXXXI
+ MDCCCLII
= MMMDCCXXVIII

Roman numerals didn't support arithmetic as they were simply abbreviations for physical amounts. In fact business people in ancient Rome would use calculators whenever they needed work with Roman numerals. The calculator back then was the abacus. Like most other numerical systems Roman numerals were mainly concerned with addition. In the beginning, the digits were independent of one another. One Roman numeral next to another usually meant that you would add their values together. So II was two and III was three.

Rules of Roman Numerals

Yet the Romans began to introduce silly rules. Instead of four being IIII they made it IV. The Roman numeral rule was where a small digit was placed to the left of a larger digit, the smaller digit would be subtracted from the larger digit. So IV meant 1 from 5 while VI meant 5 plus 1. Therefore a digit could be both positive or negative in effect depending on whether it was to the right or left of a higher digit! So while the Roman Empire came to dominate the world, their system of numbers was in reality not that good.

Roman Numerals were superceded by the Arabic Numerals we use today.
http://www.australiannumerals.org/ArabicNumeralstoRomanNumeralsNumbersConverter.html

The Creation of Mathematics before Australian Numerals YouTube Math Video

The Creation of Mathematics before Australian Numerals

Australian Numerals the creation of mathematics as dreamed by Australian math creator Jonathan Crabtree

Suspend logic, Australian Numerals is right brain friendly!

Free Australian Math Lessons

Australian Math Lessons

Mathematics Feedback from 67 countries

These Numerals Count!

Dear worldwide citizens. Stubborn!

I never really got Roman numerals... And Arabic digits are ok up to 5, yet like many people I struggled a bit with times tables as a kid. So after a bit of a mashup between Vedic Math, and the Trachtenberg system I've created a new set of digits.

Now people get angry at me for advocating the use of fingers for people who have difficulty with math. They say wht bother doing mental math when everyone has a calculator!

So let's see you use a calculator without fingers!

The invention of the binary (base 2 system) led to the death of imagineering numbers.

Because OIOI led to the computer, which has replaced the brain due to linear processing speed.

Out of the 3 people I've shared my Australian Numerals with (apart from my family) 2 have said "It will never catch on because all calculators and computers have Arabic Numerals and a new set of digits simply will never happen!!!

I'll be sharing the details via videos and MP3s so please join my Australian Numerals website to help get the word out when I reveal it! I'll need some sympathy when 2/3 people will most likely give me a hard time because of the global installed hardware base being incompatible with different different digits...

Should I even bother with Australian Numerals? Without going into details just yet (I'll share it all with you free) what do you think? If for example, Roman Numerals were PROVEN better than Arabic, would calculator, computer chip makers change?

Hop over to Australian Numerals

Hop over to Australian Numerals

Grab free mathematics lessons before the Australian Digits (Numerals) hit the scene!

1st math lesson from Australian Numerals

I want to clarify that I don't consider myself a mathematician. You see I got stuck at basic math and never did any advanced math. What I did do was use visualisation as a tool to teach algebraic equations. My Australian Numerals are a new set of digits that will simplify basic math and perhaps cut a few years off the 'left brain' education emphasis in schools.

In the meantime, please hop over to this link and you can see a couple of really simple math lessons taught in a different way.

I'd be interested in what you think...
